Walden Bello's Intrigues Serves Imperialist Agenda of State Terror Against People's Organizations Struggling for Land, Jobs and Self-determination
BAYAN-USA STATEMENT
February 1, 2005

A recent statement by Walden Bello and Focus on the Global South attempts to generate public concern about their Executive Director's safety. This worry stems from an article published in the Ang Bayan, the official publication of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) which Bello claims to be a "hit-list". In their own statement, Global South lists seven prominent people's organizations as connected to the CPP. Among them are KMP, KMU, Migrante, and CPA-organizations representing thousands of Filipino peasants, workers, and indigenous
people-- members of BAYAN-Philippines, which represents the Filipino people's broadest and largest organized struggle for national sovereignty and genuine
democracy in the Philippines.

As the only overseas chapter of BAYAN, the newly founded BAYAN-USA condemns Bello's self-serving and reckless actions. While deeply concerned with the safety of a single personality, Bello's Global South further endangers those already being targeted and murdered under the guise of Bush/GMA's "war on terror." Just recently, the people mourned the killing of Oscar Galicia a KMP leader in Camarines Sur, who was killed by Philippine paramilitary forces and the massacre of
KMU-affiliated Hacienda Luisita sugar plantation workers, by the Philippine National Police. The U.S.-backed Arroyo have been engaged in a serious campaign of surveillance, abduction, summary executions, torture and massacre of activists, who are members of these legal organizations.

As an academic and author of various books and articles on U.S. militarism, Bello is deeply knowledgeable on military counterinsurgency warfare tactics used by military intelligence. Bello and Global South must be well aware of Arroyo's regime's record of human rights violations against activists and ordinary people under the pretense of "war on terror". They must also be fully aware that the CPP has been put on the U.S. "terrorist list" in order to justify the attacks against those genuinely opposed U.S. imperialism. By falsely accusing Jose Maria Sison of authoring a so-called 'hit list" and spreading malicious misinformation about the CPP, Bello helps advance the Bush-GMA regime's campaign to criminalize and tag revolutionaries as 'terrorists.' By declaring that certain organizations work with the CPP, Bello and company are furthering the state's campaign and framework of terror against the people, and serves to justify and condone the brutal military repression already suffered by members of these legal people's organizations. Bello's gratuitous false claims endangers real people involved in real struggles against U.S. imperialism. These actions are deplorable and should be fully criticized.

BAYAN-USA condemns Bello's intrigues and opportunism and calls on all people to demand and uphold the truth, and protection of those rightfully fighting for land, jobs, and self-determination.
